Yesterday I went to the 44th Annual National Hollerin’ Contest with my friend Arrie (who plans to compete next year!). Hollerin’ is an old tradition used to communicate between farms before there were phones and radios. There are distress hollers, locator hollers, expressive hollers, courtin’ hollers, and just about every other kind of holler. Different communities had different sounds.

Forgive the bad video quality and just listen. It was extremely buggy and I was swatting mosquitos with one hand and holding my phone with the other.

We had a great time, and we both got cross something off the life list.
